The OWF 1.0 Agreements - Granted Claims
Contributor License Agreement (CLA)
The Open Web Foundation Contributor License Agreements are intended to apply during the development phase of a specification project. There are two different CLAs to choose from. The Copyright-only CLA defines the copyright grant, as well as warranty disclaimers and other legal terms, that apply to contributions to a project, so that all participants are free to create and publish copies and derivative works of those contributions. The Copyright and Patent CLA includes all the terms of the Copyright-only CLA, but also includes a patent grant that applies to a contributors own contributions (but not the contributions made by others).
Projects should require contributors to sign a CLA before accepting contributions from those contributing companies or individuals.
Open Web Foundation Agreement (OWFa)
The Open Web Foundation Agreements are designed to be applied to specifications that are either considered ready for deployment or are already currently in use. The OWFa 1.0 agreement contains both copyright and patent grants to allow anyone to make, use and sell implementations of the specification. The OWFa 1.0 Patent-only agreement does not include copyright terms, and is appropriate for uses where the copyright is already covered by another agreement (e.g., by a standards body) or if a different copyright license is desired.
The OWFa agreements may be applied to specifications regardless of the development model for the specifications. For example, OWFa agreements may be used with community developed specifications, specifications independently developed by an individual or corporation, or specifications developed by a standards body.
